Cooden Millennium Afternoon Townswomen's Guild

THE February meeting was touch-and-go with the snow.

We cancelled our speaker and to our great delight had another special surprise.

We have three generations of the Barker family in our guild, Nesta, her daughter Kath and her daughter Lisa - who arrived with the fourth generation, five week-old baby Luke Saint.

Before the meeting started we were thrilled to have a cuddle with this handsome little fellow who never made a murmur throughout the whole meeting.

Kaye Murphy, chairman, opened the meeting and asked for a minute's silence in memory of Mrs Joyce Griggs who had passed away followed by her husband a few days later.

Kaye then thanked so many for turning out on such a cold, wet and gave a special thank you to Mrs Doreen Shields for the birthday cake she had made for January but was herself too poorly to attend. Kaye handed out the birthday cards and in return we were able to give her one.

The minutes of the January meeting were agreed and signed. The secretary gave a special thank you to Gwen Lambert, Maureen Parris and Barbara Lindsay for their grand efforts over the last two meetings with our Christmas and birthday parties. They were given a big round of applause.

The chairman then asked for the guild members to agree an amendment to the standing orders, altering the number of committee members from 10 to 14, including the four officers.

Mrs Freda Appleyard reminded members that the next federation council meeting was on February 16 at Eastbourne and asked for support for our secretary who was taking over the same job with the federation.

Mrs Frances Abbott gave her treasurer's report and was collecting new subscriptions and also money for the federation luncheon in April.

Mrs Murphy thanked Dorothy Adams for the late Christmas party she had given for Social Conversation and also to Mrs Evelyn Newman for helping her.

The guild were informed of the alteration from May 11 to June 8 for Social Studies Day at St Peter's, Old Town, when we expect full support from the guild for our stage performance. Kaye said that our charity had made 500 and we now had to think of a new one for the coming year.

St Michael's Hospice had been suggested and the meeting were in full agreement.

Mrs Valerie Cannon spoke again about the outing she is hoping to run, probably in April, to the Bluebell Railway with either fish and chip lunch or cream tea. Thanks to Valerie, we have had some good outings during the past 12 months.

After tea, we made our own entertainment including, of course, Freda who loves to be the star of our show, with several other ladies joining in.

All in all, what could have been a 'snow-out' was a very enjoyable afternoon.
