DVD review: Mojave (3 out of 5)

It's strange how some films just seem to arrive under the radar and don't get the accolades they deserve.

Mojave certainly comes into that category.

It’s a fascinating thriller with a distinct film noir feel about it.

It’s not your good versus evil scenario with a happy ending and all the loose ends tied up.

But let’s face it, life generally isn’t like that.

Garrett Hedlund plays Tom, a seemingly successful artist with a distinctly dark side who has a strange encounter with a drifter, Jack (Oscar Isaac), out in the desert.

Jack follows Tom back to LA, now holding a dark secret over his head.

The film builds to a dramatic finale that takes some unexpected turns.

Along with some excellent performances by Hedlund and Isaacs, Mark Wahlberg has an effective cameo.

Director William Monahan gets the atmosphere just right, with dramatic contrasts of brilliant sunshine and pitch black gloom in the desert.

It’s one of those movies that could well be a slow burner and there will definitely be an audience for the DVD.
