Exploring the absurdities and the beauty of human nature

ONE of the south east’s leading figurative painters, Robert Sample, debuts at The blackShed Gallery on June 16 with a collection of new works.

The St Leonards-based artist explores humanity and its extremes in all his work, focusing attention on that which is often overlooked.

He welcomes the viewer to look deeper into the absurdities and beauty of human nature, making work from the day-to-day observations of St Leonards and Hastings.

Robert is highly regarded among his peers having worked the north London galleries of Shoreditch and Hoxton Square for many years.

He explores, by the use of many traditional and contemporary methods, a world that has strong visual references to early masters and styles, yet firmly rooted in the present. This show consists of 12 new paintings surrounding the anthropomorphic relationship between animals and humans.

Kenton Lowe, artist and curator at The blackShed Gallery said: “There is nothing simple about this work, its weird, dark and sometimes a little disturbing, but brilliant!”

The blackShed Gallery is a contemporary art space in the heart of the East Sussex countryside. The gallery is hidden from the main high street, but can be found easily along an old farm track, just off the A21 in an old converted chicken shed.
