Familiar Horsham sights in artist’s watercolour display

It is often said that watercolour is the hardest medium in which to paint, but the new exhibition by artist Fiona Brent, entitled ‘Light and Landscape’, at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, amply demonstrates just how superb watercolours can be.

Fiona grew up in Horsham and attended Millais School and Collyer’s where she studied Art.

Her interest in painting was rekindled five years ago when the family purchased a coastal property on Hayling Island. Since then, the variable light, colours and scenery of the British countryside and coastline have been a constant inspiration for Fiona’s watercolours and she particularly enjoys painting scenes that are local to her home in South London, the English and Welsh countryside and coastline where she frequently walks.

For this exhibition Fiona has chosen a range of local subjects, from sea views around Chichester harbour and along the south coast to the verdant woodlands of the Sussex countryside, and she has included some familiar sights within Horsham itself.

Her renderings of the Causeway and along East Street will certainly resonate with viewers.

Some of Fiona’s wider inspirations also appear, such as the soaring escarpments of the Black Mountains in Wales, and some of the well-known sights in London.

The exhibition ‘Light and Landscape: Watercolours by Fiona Brent’ opened at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery on Friday, May 1, and closes on Saturday, June 27.
