Eastbourne's cinema heritage explored with screening of Half A Sixpence

Starring Tommy Steele, the movie was partly filmed in Eastbourne in 1967.

Steve Scott, artistic director of The Grove Theatre, said: “A superb family film, it tells the story of Arthur Kipps, an orphan apprenticed to a master, who has a sudden abrupt change of life when his wealthy grandfather dies and leaves him a pile of money. Based on the hit Broadway show, it features songs such as Money to Burn, I Know What I Am, and the show-stopping Flash, Bang, Wallop!

“Eastbourne has a hidden history of great movies which have been shot in our town, and we’re going to be showcasing a number of films starring Eastbourne in the coming months. We’d especially love to hear from any residents who can remember seeing Tommy Steele and the crew’s visits back in 1967.”

The Grove Theatre is situated under the Central Library building in Grove Road. The auditorium is set out to allow social distancing, and tickets can be booked individually, in pairs or tables of four. There is a fully licensed bar with table service.
