Gunpowder Plot November 5, 1605.

UNDER the House of LordsA cellar's vault affordsA chance for plotters to stock their hoardsOf gunpowder to killThe King at their willAnd M.P.'s with intentJoin him in the firmament.So, Guy Fawkes, soldier, not one to lose,A militant most keenWas chosen from thirteenWith the experience, in all their views,To hide in the cellar, then light the fuse.

This plot, most illegal

Would kill Lord Monteagle,

Who received a note to inveigle

Him not to attend;

By Tresham was penned.

Unsigned, with no names

Monteagle took it to James

And the fate of the plotters was sealed.

On the night of the fourth,

The King's men went forth

And at midnight Guy Fawkes made to yield.

Then trampled and trussed, before Monarch was kneeled.

Tortured, he lasted two days;

Gave names, in pain half crazed.

Yes, in making him talk, they had '“' ways'.

Meanwhile, the plotters rode north,

To escape the Royalists' wrath;

But despite all their guile,

They were brought back for trial

And then they were hung, drawn and quartered!

So, but for that letter,

Events might have gone better

And the plotters' plans might not have faltered;

Then how this island's story would have altered.
