Hastings and District Association of Wrens

THE chairman welcomed us to our October meeting and told us that she had informed headquarters of the closure of the branch, and that as from February 2011 we shall be meeting informally once a month. She had received a letter of thanks for our donation of £52.86 to Help for Heroes.

It was hoped that everyone had received their tickets for the 90th anniversary celebrations, marking the foundation of the Association of Wrens. Joy Jacombs was congratulated on reaching her 90th birthday.

Names were taken for our Christmas lunch, and members were told of the 1066 Parade in Hastings on Sunday, October 17.

We then enjoyed a most interesting talk by Alan Stainsbury on “High status food in the late 14th century”. Bodiam Castle was taken as an example of the layout of its great hall. These halls were similar in all castles of the period, as was the organisation and serving of food at banquets. We were also given a great deal of fascinating information about the huge variety of food served and the manners of the guests in that period.

As always, the raffle was drawn before the meeting closed. Our next meeting will be on November 2, to which any former Wrens will be made very welcome. For further details, please telephone 01424 222721 or 01424 447958.
