He is nowadays responsible for most of the blue plaques which can be found on many buildings in Hastings and St Leonards. They are, in truth "the writing on the wall", for they record the names of many famous persons from all walks of life who have lived in the town at some point in its history '“ names that read like a catalogue of distinguished residents. From the field of literature we can find the names of Lord Byron, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Lewis Carroll, Rider Haggard and the Sussex novelist, Sheila Kaye-Smith. Sir John Moore, of "Corunna" fame and the Duke of Wellington are there, David Garrick from the field of theatre, and, of course the inspirational Grey Owl, the Hastings-born English man who early last century, adopted the cause of the American Indians. Truly a fascinating story, and one making us eager to patrol the streets and find more about local distinguished residents.
