Heath now locked at the top with Lewes after big victory

The pitches were very wet underfoot and the ball slippery but both sides adapted well to conditions and the opening 20 minutes remained scoreless.

Heath who had missed a couple of opportunities in the early stages playing down hill but into a strong headwind used their strength in the forwards to take a grip of the game and following a well executed rolling maul hooker Joss Townsend went down the blind side to score in the corner. 5 -0 Heath.

Heath continued to dominate without adding to the score. It was 5 minutes before the break that they were on the board again with a scorching break from centre Jack Lucas getting to within 5 metres of the opposition line before knocking on in the tackle . From the ensuing Worthing scrum the ball shot out into the in goal area and Heath scrum half Hartley pounced to score the try. 10 -0 Heath.

On the stroke of half time a break and fly hack from full back Sam Galbraith took him to within 10 metres of the try line where he looked guaranteed to score but was tripped by a chasing opponent. The referee went under the sticks for a penalty try and binned the Worthing prop for his offence. Skipper Casey Calder was struggling with kicking into the wind and couldn’t add the two points.

At halftime Heath turned round with a 15-0 lead and a one man advantage. Although the ground was sapping Heath continued to look lively in search of the bonus point and proceeded to run in a further 5 tries in the second half as a resilient Worthing side started to tire. Tries from second half substitute Steve May and a second for Hartley took the score to 29 - 0 as Calder found his kicking boots.

A classy break from the three quarters took Calder deep into opposition territory on the right side of the pitch who when finally held by the defenders managed a cheeky back of the hand offload to the supporting Lucas to score in the corner. Calder put the extras over for 36 -0 to Heath. Heath continued to keep their foot on the gas and a great counter attack from his own half by fly half Jack Best gave a bit of space to winger James Wright to beat two men on the outside and go over in the corner for 41- 0 to Heath .

The final try of the match came with a minute remaining when the Heath forwards showed that it wasn’t just the backs who could entertain with running rugby - the ball went through hands to front row Euan Greaves - Smith who drew the defence and put the supporting number 8 May in under the posts for his second try. Calder sealed the win by sticking the ball through the uprights and a final score of 48-0 .

Heath’s bonus point win and Lewes failing to take the bonus point in a tight game away at Hove meant the two sides are now locked at the top of the table.

Next weekend Heath are away at Midhurst.
