Horsham-based Mikey is among the performers on the new album Baudrillard’s Romancer which has been compiled by Chichester’s Sean BW Parker.

The album features 13 different artists, around half from Chichester. It is available from Sean’s seragliopointproductions.com and also Amazon and iTunes.

“Baudrillard is a French philosopher who is concerned with the end of media and the fact it doesn’t exist at all,” Sean explains.”

His thinking struck a chord with Mickey: “Baudrillard is concerned with life as a series of simulacra, a series of images. He is grappling with how to create authentic experience once again”, Mickey said.

Sean added: “Baudrillard enjoys being photographed, and so it was easy to get a very good image of him. But the point is that he has got a heart too. Even the coldest, hard-core intellectuals have a heart.

“A lot of the artists who appear on Seraglio Point Productions can be seen as rather cold and cerebral, but they have still got a heart. These are all love songs of a certain stripe. I hate overt love songs, and I try to keep away from that, but if they are well done, they can be the most beautiful things in the world.”

For the evening Mikey will be joined by his current band, The Civilsed Scene. Support comes from Jenna Marya and her band.

Mikey said: “I have been into music ever since I was a kid, but I never really thought I would be a musician. It was not until I moved to Brighton just after leaving art school that I met other artists, and we fell into creating a theatrical pop experience. That was very interesting. I always thought I would be an illustrator!”

Mikey, who continues to play with David Devant & His Spirit Wife, describes his music as baroque pop: “I am interested in melody and harmony and lyrics combining to create transcendence.

“I write about the every-day and about the wonder of the every-day. You can never tell where it is going to come from. The music is largely about finding the wonder of personal experience.

“I play with the band, and I also play solo. I have got two albums as Mr Solo which is a self-conscious way of saying that I am doing a solo project. It was an art-based performance experience. I would perform in unusual places with back projection. I am taking that multimedia thing but putting it in a jarringly-mundane setting.

“For this album, I have contributed a song called The Half of It, as in ‘you don’t know...’

“One half is the schematised academic view, and the other half is the heart. The song is about gossip in a village, but the village could equally well be Facebook.”

As Sean says, the song was out there: “That’s what happens with Seraglio Point Productions.

“We can’t afford to get people to go out to record songs yet, but what we do is collect songs that are already there and then I conceptualise them into something that works.”

And it has certainly worked for Mikey: “I have enjoyed the process of having the track on the album, and in the process having it on the album has helped me see what the track is all about.”
