Presented as a multi-layered installation in the Pier Hub, the exhibition is intended as a poetic insight into the physical and perceptual experiences of people with complex needs and their continuing sensory investigations of the materials, space, light and elemental situation of the place.

Project Art Works is a pioneering artist-led organisation using contemporary visual art to empower people with profound intellectual impairment.

The weekly Tuesday Studios is formed of makers who communicate through gesture, sound, behaviour and facial expression. Through a series of workshops, they have been investigating the Pier surroundings from the promenade and beach over the past year and My Dad used to Fish at the End of the Pier echoes the creative set-ups and processes that have been explored.

The title is taken from a short film made by Marion Willis, a participating maker in the Studios. Many of the makers such as Stanley Ellis, Luke Bebb and India O’Sullivan exhibit their work at national arts institutions including Jerwood Gallery, Hastings; Pallant House, Chichester; and De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill.

A documentary film ‘portrait’ of the Pier by Tim Corrigan, lead artist at Project Art Works, will be shown at the launch of the newly restored Hastings Pier in early 2016.

My Dad used to Fish at the End of the Pier is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund which is also funding the restoration of Hastings Pier.
