Little Common Horticultural Society

OUR first meeting of the new year was a tour around the best winter gardens with Clive Richardson to see the snowdrops.

It really was a sight! Mostly grown around church properties apparently cultivated for use at candlemas - Forde Abbey in Somerset being a good example. We saw other gardens opened only in the winter months for their colour showing hellebores and drift of the beautifully coloured dogwood stems. Thank you Clive for a good beginning to our growing year. Dates for for diaries of our members: McBean's Orchids. A car trip for those who missed last year - February 11. Please contact our secretary. Cost of 4 covers the conducted tour plus a donation to the car driver.

Annual Lunch at the Cooden Beach Hotel - Wednesday, March 19. Cost 18.45 for three course carvery. Contact outings officer with choice of starter and dessert.

Wisley Gardens - Wednesday, April 16. Cost 8. Free entry for our members.

This trip has been arranged particularly for the spring colour and the new glasshouse which is well worth seeing. Departure outside the Wheatsheaf at 9am.

Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire - Wednesday, June 18. Cost 20 (12.50 for NT members). This outing is particularly for the special rose weeks. Departure from the Wheatsheaf 8.30am.

The first coffee morning which we call a plant sale (because this is what we do best) will be on April 10. We were reminded that subscriptions are now due - 5 per year (2 of which is the affiliation fee to the Community Centre). The next meeting on February 8 is New Zealand and its sub-Antarctic Islands by Mrs B Holcomb. Those who have seen Lord of the Rings will know what a beautiful country this is.
