DAVID Lang came to share with us A Long Thin Journey, which we guessed correctly was about Chile. Very topical and, as he said, the Chileans are very pro-English as shown by their president's recent visit here.

The slides were excellent, showing most of the flora and some of the fauna of this interesting South American country which we were recommended to visit. A warning - go via Madrid not the USA if you want to avoid immigration difficulties!

Some of the flowers David showed, such as the many types of orchid, were growing in large numbers by the side of the road. This in itself should be invitation enough to encourage us to travel there one day.

There was an excellent display of flowers, plants, vegetables and domestic in our monthly show and members really look forward to this burst of colour as the days grow shorter. New members are encouraged to take part - next month we look forward to the autumn-flowering camelias.

Some members visited Hole Park, near Rolvenden, Kent, recently and agreed it was a beautiful and interestingly laid out garden which can be appreciated during any season of the year. Some of us have already made a note to return again in bluebell time.

At our next meeting on November 12 David Penny will give a talk and demonstration of Bonsai” and Reynolds will bring plants to sell at discount.
