Navarra String Quartet are the guests in Chichester

Terry Barfoot has pioneered a new form of collaboration with the Navarra String Quartet to present the life and works of Papa Haydn, illustrated by selected movements from his string quartets and a complete performance of his Opus 74 No 4 – Sunrise.

FMG chairman David Tinsley said: “Terry Barfoot is a well-known figure in the musical life of southern England. He gives pre-concert lectures at The Hawth Theatre Crawley, Portsmouth Guildhall and The Lighthouse, Poole, and works regularly at Dillington House and at Oxford University, where in 2015 he gave a series of lectures on the life and music of Mozart.

“Terry writes for many classical music magazines and his book Opera: A History was published by The Bodley Head. He writes programme notes for many leading festivals and orchestras, including the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, for whom he is publications consultant. He has also written CD notes for EMI, Chandos, Virgin Classics, Regis and ASV.

“Terry has frequently collaborated with leading musicians and conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Marin Alsop He is Vice President of the Arthur Bliss Society, the Havant Orchestras, Southampton Music Club and Portsmouth Baroque Choir, and an Honorary Member of the Berlioz Society.

With his own company, Arts in Residence, he promotes musical events at agreeable locations throughout Britain and in Europe, and in recent years has led visits to Nuremberg, Leipzig, Vienna, Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague.”

David added: “Since its formation in 2002, the Navarra String Quartet has built an international reputation as one of the most dynamic and poetic string quartets of today. The quartet has appeared at major venues throughout the world including the Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus, and international festivals such as Bath, Rheingau, Huntingdon (Australia), Aix-en-Provence, and the BBC Proms.

“Further afield they have given concerts in Russia, the USA, China, Korea and the Middle East and have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, RAI 3 (Italy), Radio 4 (Holland), SWR (Germany), Radio Luxembourg and ABC Classic FM (Australia). Highly-acclaimed recordings include Haydn’s The Seven Last Words for Altara Records.

“Formed at the Royal Northern College of Music, they continued with studies in Cologne with the Alban Berg Quartet, Pro-Quartet in Paris, the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove and gained residencies at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh and at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

“The Quartet plays on a variety of fine instruments which include a Hieronymus II Amati and Panormo violins, an unknown old English viola and a Ruggieri cello.”
