New Littlehampton arts venue in the frame

LITTLEHAMPTON’S newest arts venue has opened its first exhibition, with a strong contemporary flavour.

The Empress Bar, on the popular riverside walkway through the town’s harbour area, is showcasing the work of artist Dan Carman from now until March 12.

He is the first in a series of artists whose work will be displayed on the walls of the bar, in a joint venture with the organisation Sussex Art.

Born in Littlehampton, Dan took up painting only six years ago, but has, over the past few years, honed his style of pop art-inspired portraits, his subjects mainly drawn from the worlds of television, film and music, including Marilyn Monroe, Twiggy, Brigitte Bardot and rockers Iron Maiden.

His work has sold in the US, Europe and Australia.

Dan works as a local land charges technical assistant at Arun District Council.

Sussex Art is a group of artists from the Littlehampton area and further afield.

Many took part in last year’s Littlehampton Arts Trail, organised by Littlehampton artist Mark Jolly, who is also co-ordinating the series of exhibitions at the Empress Bar, which are set to be changed every three weeks.
