A CHARMING lady with an infectious smile and a relaxed manner recently visited the Rotary Club of Senlac.

This was Pam Vieler, and her presentation was entitled Memories after the War.

The story was about recalling family life through photographs and articles, highlighting styles of dress and the front headlines on national newspapers.

Pictures of D-Day and scenes in the 1940s set Rotarians in the mood to recall their own experiences.

At the time Pam was living in Eastbourne. She showed pictures of her mum and dad's wedding, grandma's clothing (pipecleaners were used to curl hair), which led on to images of milkmen and customers wearing gas masks.

When a child was born payment was required by the doctor in attendance, and when Pam was a schoolgirl children were evacuated.

In most families little money was available and visits to the public house meant entertainment was restricted to dominoes.

Causing much laughter (reason not known), it was customary to buy "yesterday's bread" '“ bread was even ironed to create crispness.

For dessert the popular fruit/pie, etc., was to be eaten with custard.

The copper on the open fire was a common sight.

For Christmas cards, knitted squares were normal practice.

For extra income, employed people worked through their lunch hour.

Pam recalls her father returning from Burma.

Prefabs were erected in Princes Park, having a central door, assembled by POWs.

Mother preferred her prefab to a council house; and died at age of 86.

Further photographs showed Pam in knitted swimming costume and men in knitted trunks. Pam's father made toys and created a fishing weight to catch crayfish from the sea, at Birling Gap.

The speaker recalled days of the tradesman calling at houses such as the baker selling bread in waxed paper and offering sticky buns

Roller skates appeared; hop scotch was the 'in' game; ration books; clothing coupons; motorcycle coupons; unemployment book 1944 (for stamps) and identity cards were the norm.

Many remedies for ailments were mentioned '“ California syrup of figs, ex-lax and worm cake (chocolate-like buttons).

Pam progressed onto the 1950s and Coronation with street parties (tables in streets, no cloths). Sheets were made into pillow cases.

The wet fish man was regular on the streets with his cry 'All-alive, Alive Oh''!

The 9in television, with a magnifying glass was seen within family houses.

Concluding, Pam stated 40 years ago she became a mum, proudly presenting a 'boy'. So, the evening having stirred the minds with laughter and reflections on own early childhood the presentation was heralded as 'different', 'unusual' but most entertaining.

Rotarian Roger Young commented on his own experiences as a young person and applauded the speaker, on behalf of assembled Rotarians, for the memories revealed and allowing the audience to participate and capture so many sights forgotten but brought back to life.

THE annual exhibition closed on Monday, August 31.

The exhibition consisted of black and white photography and the club has been extremely pleased with the response especially from youngsters who are showing an interest in the traditional craft.

We would like to thank Steve and Louise together with the staff at Eat @ Ours Restaurant for their continued support and interest in our club.

We would also like to thank the many friends and members of the public who have shown their support for our exhibition.

Little Common Photographic Club

ON A beautifully sunny and hot Sunday afternoon in August, 12 members of Little Common Photographic Club with six guests met for the annual garden party, and enjoyed the kind hospitality of June and John Larkin with a relaxing afternoon of convivial conversation; leisurely games and delicious food.

After nearly four months summer break during which time it is hoped everyone has had an opportunity to take pictures ready for the forthcoming Club Trophy competitions, which include Set Subjects of trees for Slides and faces for prints.

The 2009/10 season starts on Monday, September 14 with a friendly social evening and an "old slide" show, where everyone brings along between five and 10 slides that have been taken at any time before the year 2000 '“ the earlier the better!

This fIrst meeting is an open evening to welcome any prospective new members who, it is hoped, will also bring along some slides.

So if you enjoy taking photos '“ either prints including digitally produced or slides and like showing them to other people '“ why not come along to this friendly evening to see if you would like to join.

With a gradual change from slide format to digital images, Little Common are looking to introduce Digital Image Projection and have included a couple of lectures relating to this, which are the next two meetings.

Firstly, on Monday, September 28 there will be a lecture by Ted Sturgeon LRPS entitled "Guide to basic digital imaging" followed on Monday, October 12 with a demonstration of digital imaging and how it is done by Paul Carrington '“ both are members of Bexhill Photographic Club.

Meetings for the Little Common Photographic Club are held fortnightly on Mondays in the Main Hall at the Community Centre in Shepherds Close, Little Common starting at 7.45 pm.
