Passion from choral society

The St Matthew Passion by J S Bach is the featured work in Arun Choral Society’s next concert on Saturday, April 9 in Arundel Cathedral.

Composed in 1729, the work was first heard at the Good Friday service in St Thomas’ Church in Leipzig where Bach was cantor and organist.

Spokeswoman Drinda Gibbons said: “It is important to remember that the work was intended as an act of worship, with the congregation joining in by singing the many chorales which were based on hymns well known by everyone. The Society hopes to recreate this atmosphere by inviting the audience to join with the choir in some of the chorales during the performance.”
