REVIEW: Let It Be, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, until January 23.

Standing on the stage where the real Fab Four once stood half a century ago, the band comprising Let It Be offer the best possible tribute - an evening which lets you into what it must actually have been like all those years ago.

But best of all, this is a concert tribute which offers the full story as we go from Cavern to Shea stadium, from Sgt Pepper all the way through to that Apple building rooftop session with a near-perfect rendition of all the greatest hits from throughout their career.

Adding to it all is the fact that the actors capture the personalities so brilliantly. Reuven Gershon absolutely nails Lennon’s edgy charm; and Iain Hornal convincingly gives us all those McCartney mannerisms. Paul Mannion quite rightly holds back at first as George and then slowly, but powerfully emerges. His While My Guitar Gently Weeps was right up there among the night’s highlights - alongside a terrific rendition of the Abbey Road medley.

Projections of contemporary footage and adverts add to the fun.

It’s difficult to say quite why this is a show rather than simply a night with a very, very good tribute band, but somehow it is - a great night and a great celebration of some of the greatest music ever written.
