Steam engines galore at today's ploughing show

Don't miss an exciting day of steam and skill as West Grinstead and District Ploughing and Agricultural Society's annual ploughing match and show returns today.

The event is hosted by the South Lodge Estate and Mr and Mrs Tregear, and entrance on the day will be one-way on Picts Lane, accessed only via the A281.

Attendees will get the chance to watch a demonstration of steam ploughing with some massive engines at work.

The society, established in 1871, has been holding shows for more than 140 years and is pro-active in promoting interests of the local farming community, including holding a range an extensive range of field competitions throughout the year.

In addition to the ploughing classes - which include Novice, Open and Vintage - there is the great crowd-puller of horse ploughing.

There will be tractor and trailer rides round the show, with the ever popular Harris Fun Fair present with its classic rides.

There are also hedge laying, hedge cutting and welding competitions, where competitors show off their rural crafts.

The Livestock Show will include a range of cattle and sheep classes, including the ever popular lamb and calf handling classes with the future generation of farmers taking part.

There will also be a selection of other rural based attractions, including the Parade of Hounds from the Crawley and Horsham Hunt and the very popular terrier racing, ferret racing, clay pigeon shoot, competitive training by the Uility Gundog Society, including scurry open to all andd demonstrations.

This day out for all the family costs £5 per adult with children under 14 free.
