Frances Bristow is a sculptor who moved into the local area last year. Frances works with a variety of stone and has a particular interest in indian granite from Tamil Nadu and marble from Rajasthan. She has worked and exhibited in Mahabalipuram on the Bay of Bengal with sculptors from across Europe.

Frances carefully selects her stone from a stone yard, rough-cuts it nearby and when ready, the pieces are shipped back to her studio in England. This is where she continues to refine and finish her art works.

This show features over fourteen of her most recent works. Her work is organic in appearance, exploring natural shape and form. She shapes and polishes the stone’s surfaces, often leaving traces of broken areas allowing the stone’s structure to emerge, or just leaving it to reveal itself.

Her sculptures resemble sections of drifted sand dunes, twisted entwined roots and split seed pods. The finished pieces are raw and cold to touch, but remain seductive and tactile.

Frances grew up in East Anglia and London and trained as a physiotherapist, recognising physical conditions through feeling shape and texture in the human body. Frances has exhibited in India as well as the UK: this will be her first show in this area.

The exhibition runs 14th December to 25th January at the blackShed gallery, Russet Farm, Redlands Lane, Robertsbridge TN32 5NG. For more info contact Kenton Lowe 01580 881247 [email protected] Gallery hours Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 4pm
