Story of the oboe

The Funtington Music Group’s early spring lecture recital at the University of Chichester told the story of the development of the oboe, as related and played by Gwenllian Davies, who returned to the Funtington Music Group as guest presenter for this recital.

David Tinsley, chairman of the Funtington Music Group, said: “An outstanding oboe player herself, Gwenllian enthused the audience as she showed, through the playing of various early oboes, how the sounds we know today from the modern oboe are at the end of a long line of historical development.

“Her first work was a piece by a little known composer Jaques Hotteterre le Romain, and he was chosen as he is the first known composer to have written music for the oboe. This was followed with a piece by Bach, and then by Mozart.

“After the interval Gwenllian played music from the 19th and then the 20th Century, including a piece from contemporary composer Simon Bainbridge entitled Music for Mel and Nora.
