Taking the music to church in Playden

Put together one bombshell of a soprano, one mezzo soprano, two bearded fellas singing tenor and baritone, and what do you have? Some Enchanted Evening, that’s what.

Playden Church was the venue for music from the worlds of opera and musical theatre. The four soloists sang alone or with one other performer, only together as a quartet in the final item from Verdi’s Rigoletto.

The first part of the concert was operatic songs, by all the ‘greats’, sung in a variety of languages. After the interval, the audience reassembled to be regaled by several very well-known Gilbert and Sullivan songs. They suited both the acoustic and the appreciative audience. We also heard songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter and Bernstein.

Sally Harrison, soprano; Angela Simkin, mezzo; Anthony Flaum, tenor; and Ross Ramgobin are to be congratulated and thanked for a lovely evening of music. The pianist, David Eaton had ever so many notes to play, all apparently faultless! And the narrator, Alexander Hunt gave linking stories and facts, and poems, relevant to the songs. The evening was devised by James Black, who also wrote the narrative.

This event was organised by the Friends of Playden Church to help to raise funds for the re-shingling of the spire, which will cost over £100,000.
