NO THIS isn’t the Keira Knightley thriler from 2001 about teenagers exploring a mysterious hole in the ground. This movie is about teenagers exploring a mysterious hole in the ground.... in 3D!

To be fair, this new film is actually nothing like its namesake - it’s far more upbeat and will appeal to a much wider audience.

The story follows two brothers Dane and Lucas Thompson who, with their mum Susan, move to a sleepy US town. It’s the kind of town where new people moving in is as exciting as it gets.

Of most interest for Dane, though, is next door neighbour Julie.

However, the three of them uncover a trap door in the basement which is firmly shut with six locks attached.

Now, being normal teenagers they do what comes naturally - they open the trap door and unleash various nasty ‘things’ that will test their nerves.

Director Dante gave us Gremlins and The Hole has a similar sort of feel to it - plenty of malevolent horror but shying away from limbs being hacked off and blood and gore flying around. In fact, it’s a great example of how to shock people by using their imagination and good direction.

With a 12a certificate and the main cast being young people there will be the opportunity for a teenage audience to view The Hole. But they probably see far worse on TV these days, though there are moments that will make you jump and you might have nightmares about clowns.

The 3D is pretty good and actually adds to the film and there is a cameo performance from Hollywood legend Bruce Dern for movie buffs.
