On Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, the hugely talented group of 79 young people performed Les Misérables (School Edition) four times over evening and matinee shows.

Director of last year’s Summer School production Hairspray, Matt McGoldrick returned to The Capitol for this year’s production and has been impressed by the standard of local talent.

He said: “Within such a short rehearsal period these young performers have worked tirelessly and without fear to create their own version of Les Miserablés.

“The company of actors has managed to find moments of truth, both as individuals and as a group. In these moments we share in the magic and importance of this wonderful piece of theatre.”

The world’s longest running musical is set against the backdrop of 19th century France, telling a story of broken dreams, unrequited love, sacrifice and redemption. Ex-convict Jean Valjean is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole. When Jean Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fatine’s daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

General manager of The Capitol Nick Mowat said: “I think it is so important that we offer young people opportunities to learn, grow in confidence and develop skills and their personalities in a friendly, safe environment as these experiences can help them so much as they go on to develop as young people.”
