REVIEW: Back to Broadway at the Capitol Theatre, Horsham

The cast of Back to Broadway got the Horsham audience dancing on their feet on Friday night with an enjoyable romp of a show.

I assumed at first it would be a show full of tunes from ‘old Broadway like 42nd Street, A Chorus Line and Oklahoma.

But what you get from the enthusiastic cast is Broadway (West Side Story, Gypsy), via the West End (Cats, Les Mis and Phantom) with a bit of Disney thrown in (Lion King, Beauty and the Beast).

That’s not to say it’s not good. The eight performers have more energy than the cast of Glee after drinking a vat of Red Bull. Back to Broadway was formed in 2007 initially to produce a charity event, but the performance was so well received they were reboooked, and the rest is history.

It’s easy to see why people would revisit the show - it’s infectious and you do just want to join in with them as they sing and dance the popular tunes. Gina Price and Nick Walton steal the show with thei vocals. Price shines with her version of Memory from Cats and Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid.

Walton’s highlights are Bring Him Home from Les Miserable and If I Can’t Love Her from Beauty and the Beast. The other performers (Jessica Holly, Aaron Foster, Hannah Eastwood, Simon Bulley, Rory Cubbin and Melissa McKechine) are better dancers than they are singers, but the songs where the whole ensemble sing (Masquerade from Phantom and America from West Side story) were great.
