REVIEW: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at Theatre Royal Brighton

There was a standing ovation when the curtain came down on the first night of the feel good musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat now showing at Theatre Royal Brighton.

The audience clapped, sang and danced in their seats as the classics Any dream will do. Jacob and Sons and Close every door rang out across the theatre.

The show was funny, brilliantly sung and acted, and was the ultimate feel good sing song that left you feeling happy and uplifted.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces leaving the theatre and people continuing to sing as they made their way home.

Ian Watkins, otherwise known as H from hit pop group Steps, shined in the role of Joseph. He was the perfect choice for the part - suitably angelic with a fantastic voice.

I have seen the production before and I can honestly say he was the best Joseph I have seen in the role.

In fact I would go as far to say this was the best production of Joseph I have seen.

The cast were witty, wonderful singers and there seemed to be a natural chemistry between them that some productions lack.

I have found the show to be overly cheesy in the past, but this did not come through in this production, it was all seamless, flawless and an all round great production.

The only criticism I do have of the show, was the beginning. The screen is down to long in my opinion. It is wonderful to hear and appreciate the orchestra who did a fantastic job, but I think this could be tightened up a bit.

I particularly enjoyed the rendition of Those Canaan Days, Henry Metcalfe who plays Jacob is superb and you can really appreciate his wonderful voice.

I also really liked the way the young choir got to sing directly to the audience. I think this was a nice touch and something the youngsters will cherish.

All in all this is the best production of Joseph I have seen, and if you get the chance I urge you to see the show.

Be prepared to laugh your socks off, sing your heart out and go home feeling great.
