See tomorrow's dance stars perform at Horsham's Capitol

They will be dancing as INTOTO DANCE on Tuesday, May 17 (7.30pm).

Among them is Sami Constable: “INTOTO DANCE is the third-year contemporary company at the centre. We do our first two years mixed with other students, and in our third year we specialise in our style of dance. Everyone in INTOTO DANCE has chosen contemporary, though there are other companies for other styles.

“I chose contemporary because I think it is focused a lot more on how the movement feels and is much more about the connection with the people that you are dancing with. It is less about the aesthetic, if that makes sense. As well as being strong on technique, there is more focus on how you can make the movement your own.

“It encourages you into individual ways of moving. It gives you freedom to dance in your own way while also being very eclectic.”

Sami continues: “Being part of the company has been so different to our first and second years. It gives you a taste of what being in a professional company is really like, and so does the tour. We have got eight dates. Our first performance is in Horsham, and it is going to be fantastic. We will get a real taste of what it is going to be like to be in close proximity to the people you have been working with for the whole year. I think a lot of contemporary dance companies do tour, and there is something very interesting about the close relationships you are bound to develop on the road.

“And it will mean working in different spaces as well. There will be some stages that are bigger than others, and for some performances we will be in studios without any wings. It will be very interesting to see how you have to adapt the pieces for the different places, though we have been rehearsing in various different spaces already and I don’t suppose we will have to be changing the pieces that much. But it is definitely really exciting!

“I have always danced from a young age. My mum did the whole thing of taking me to ballet classes when I was young… the whole dancer parent thing. There were a lot of dance lessons!

“I finished my A levels and then I did a one-year apprenticeship with a contemporary company and then I auditioned for the London Studio Centre.

“I can’t remember exactly when I knew I wanted to be a dancer. I suppose it is just something that I feel I have always known.”

At The Capitol, INTOTO DANCE will present works by choreographers Gemma Nixon, Freddie Opoku-Addaie, Luke Brown and Eleesha Drennan.
