The event has been created especially for children as more celebrations for the 150th anniversary of St Wilfrid’s Church, Haywards Heath, get under way.

The venue will be St Wilfrid’s CE Primary School in Eastern Road, from 12pm to 3pm.

The whole afternoon will have an emphasis on youth.

There will be lots of stalls, old and new, at the school’s annual Summer Fair and everyone (except, perhaps the candidate who wins the election) will be looking forward to the main event of the afternoon, Gunge the Teacher, where the person with the most votes will be gunged.

Four brave members of staff have volunteered to bid for votes.

The Sussex Gym Academy and a cheerleading display will also entertain the many people expected to attend. The organisers, the Friends of St Wilfrid’s School, are also running a Bake Off with a special stall.

At 4pm the scene shifts to St Wilfrid’s Church in Church Road, where a children’s concert of ballet and music (with free admission) is being presented by Youth Can Dance Sussex and Friends of St Wilfrid’s Church. The concert is being organised by Haywards Heath composer, pianist and St Wilfrid’s Church chorister Andrew Storey.

A number of young instrumentalists and singers will take part.

The dancers are from Youth Can Dance Sussex. This offers classes, from age two upwards, at the Ashenground Community Centre, which lead to Royal Academy of Dance qualifications.

Youth Can Dance’s principal Joanna Cane said: “Our Classical Ballet pupils, some of them from St Wilfrid’s School, are looking forward with great excitement to presenting a series of their dances at the church.

“These will feature the Lilac Fairy from Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty and the children will also dance to music from Swan Lake and other favourites in the classical repertoire.”

St Wilfrid’s anniversary programme concludes on Sunday, October 11, when the Feast of St Wilfrid will be celebrated with the Rt Rev Mark Sowerby, the Bishop of Horsham.
