STAB Productions looking for a knife...and that’s no joke

STAB Productions, a new independent theatre company in Mid Sussex, is looking for a knife for its next production.

Breathing Corpses by Laura Wade will be performed over two nights at The Hub theatre in Haywards Heath.

The performances will aim to entertain and challenge audiences with a cleverly written dark comedy.

But the company is short of a couple of props, one of which is a rather crucial knife.

“It may seem ironic that a company called STAB is short of a knife but it’s a key part in one of the scenes,” said Steve Thurley who is directing the play.

“The description of the knife in the script is rather specific: a Japanese carving knife with an ornate horn and ebony handle. Obviously we can use a little artistic license and it doesn’t have to be a perfect match. These things are expensive to buy and so we’re putting out an SOS in the hope that someone will kindly lend it to us.

“They can have a free ticket for the show!”

Thurley describes the play itself as a modern masterpiece. Although the title suggests there is death around, the play is actually about the art of living.

Brilliantly scripted and crafted, it is a dark, occasionally gruesome piece, running off three storylines where each of the characters are victims.

“But its not all doom and gloom,” said Steve. “The writer has an irreverent, comic touch, sometimes in the most unsuitable of places.”

First performed in London in 2005 the play originally starred Niamh Cusack, Tamsin Outhwaite and James McAvoy and won a host of awards.

STAB Productions was formed by Steve Thurley and Andy Bairsto, who met in 2011 while rehearsing for a production of Guys & Dolls at Haywards Heath Operatic Society.

“Our remit is to create good quality modern and edgy drama in a variety of venues around Mid Sussex at a sensible and affordable price,” said Andy.

Their debut production last year was met with a huge amount of praise and the team is hoping to build on that with this and future productions. The production will again support the company’s nominated charity: The Chailey Heritage Foundation.

Performances take place on Friday and Saturday, February 27 and 28, at The Hub Theatre in Haywards Heath.

Doors open at 7pm (there is a fully licensed bar) with curtain up at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced at £10 and available from www.stabproductions.co.uk or by calling 01273 936808.
