Top Hat comes to the stage

Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre launches into its autumn season with a world stage premiere.

76 years after its movie release, Top Hat is brought to life on stage for the very first time in a production touring to The Mayflower from September 13 for two weeks.

Based on the RKO motion picture starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, the show follows the story of Jerry Travers, played by Tom Chambers, a famous American tap dancer who arrives in London to appear in his first West End show. Travers meets the irresistible society girl Dale Tremont – played by Summer Strallen – and follows her across Europe in an attempt to win her heart.

Slava’s Snowshow returning from October 4 for a week is a stunning spectacle of beautifully crafted theatrical clowning, combining the unbridled silliness of slapstick with visual extravagance and beauty, says venue spokesman Robin Hancox.

“All of which has established Slava as a creative genius of international acclaim. Slava creates a world of dream-like logic where one astonishing image melts into the next. A bed becomes a boat and a web envelopes the audience. But it is in the show’s most famous scene, when a love letter is torn up, the letter turns into snowflakes, the flakes turn into a blizzard and the audience gets caught up in a raging, whirling, snowstorm that leaves them breathless and knee deep in snow!”
