Rydon Homes Ltd applied to build the homes with footpaths, garaging and play areas on land south and west of the ancient woodland Daux Wood. The proposal outlined plans for two one bed apartments, two two-bed apartments, 12 two bed houses, 16 three bed houses and 14 four bed houses with 18 of them to be set aside for affordable housing provision.

Christopher Hough speaking for Rydon Homes Ltd told the Horsham District Council Development Control Committee South that the Marringdean Road site was sustainable and the developer had ‘sought to protect the important woodland’.

But councillors heard how the plans would mean 82 trees on the site being cut down to make way for development and there were concerns about future work to tree which would shade proposed gardens.

Many members agreed with officers that it would cause ‘demonstrable harm’ to the area and the application was unanimously refused.
