The artists all attend the county council’s Starburst Arts initiative – a performing and visual arts initiative for adults with learning disabilities in West Sussex, based at the Wrenford Centre in Chichester.

The work they are exhibiting features the efforts of 20 to 30 artists over a period of three years covering a variety of styles, including abstract paintings and textile work.

The exhibition is part of the Outburst project, which aims to show off in public the work of such artists and to promote inclusion within the community.

Phillip Judd, who is one of the artists, said: “It feels good that someone can see my work. I get more out of it and it makes me want to do more.

“When it’s out there in the community everyone sees it and I feel like an artist.

“I think it’s important that people can see what I can do.”

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “I always believe that these public exhibitions are an amazing means of connecting with the wider community for these artists and are a great opportunity for them to create works of art that can be shown publicly.

“This will also raise awareness about their abilities and creativity and demonstrate to a wider world their vision of the world, so I recommend that anyone who is in Horsham to come to County Hall North to look at these works.”
