Since March, there has been a rise in such break-ins, with garden equipment such as lawn mowers, strimmers and hedge trimmers targeted.

Police have asked residents to be aware of the increase in break-ins to sheds and outbuildings, and to report them immediately to police if they occur.

Mark Miller, neighbourhood policing team sergeant for Horsham, said: “They were originally quite concentrated to Storrington and Thakeham.

“More recently it has gone further afield, so as far as Steyning, Henfield, Billingshurst and Southwater, but we are still seeing a concentrated sea of activity in Storrington, Pulborough and Amberley.

“We don’t know whether it is local criminals or criminals travelling to us.”

Police have launched crime prevention leaflets to offer advice for residents to safeguard their belongings.

Officers have advised residents to mark valuable equipment with a permanent marker pen, as this may deter thieves.

If you own garden equipment such as a lawn mower, make sure you can describe it in detail in case of theft.

Remember to lock expensive equipment away if possible, and not to leave it unattended.

Police have also advised residents to get to know neighbours, as this can help to identify if someone suspicious is on your plot.

If you have any information about the crimes, contact Horsham police on 101.

Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
