VIDEO: Students celebrate awards at end of school year ceremony

Students received skills awards in a big ceremony.

Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form hosted the ‘Reflections On Our Inspired Generation’ event on April 26 to award Year 12 and 13 students who have been inspired to extend or enrich their learning experience.

The 2013 Steyning Grammar School Baton Bearers representing the nine enterprise skills were followed by students carrying a candlelit cake bearing the school shield.

Mrs Sally Randall, director of the sixth form college, said: “Students have flown the flag for Steyning Grammar School and as a result left a lasting legacy for future students who will relish the chance to take up the Enterprise Skills baton as the next inspired generation.

“Our Reflections 2013 has shown how our students have strived to be the best they can be and achieve personal bests in so many areas of their lives.

“They have done much to be proud of.”

Winners were called up to accept their prizes, as follows:

n Creativity Award: Paul Holt Memorial Sculpture was presented to Kirsten Large and the Weaver Musical Advancement Award to Anthony Njoku.

n Innovation Award: As a result of organising ‘Love Week’ and ‘Steyning has Talent’ to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation and Malawi School Appeal, Harry Diserens and Berit Braun received the award.

n Commitment Award: Students who had volunteered for 20 hours or more received certificates.

This included peer education and reading, volunteering in local hospitals, clubs for those with disabilities and local conservation projects.

A special award went to Emma Pegler for her volunteering work at the Chestnut Tree House Hospice.

John Stevenson, Governor and representative from the Millennium Trust presented Year 12 student Jessica Sayers with the Millennium Trust Award of £250, which she will use to support her Year 13 studies and university progression plans.

n Risk Taking Award: Presented to Oliver Prior for winning the National Senior Maths Challenge Gold Awards, he is also a stalwart of the Debating Society and Year Representative on the Teaching and Learning Committee.

n Decision Making Award: A special commendation went to Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award student Lara Wilson who had completed the whole qualification during her stay in the Sixth Form College.

n Can-Do Mind-Set Award: Young Enterprise Companies made up of young entrepreneurs picked up the award including Christina Cushing, Lara Finch, Anisha Ghosh, Abigail Muttitt, Nicole Pellicari, Lauren Allen, Berit Braun, Walter Ostroviecki and Samuel Penhallow.

n Flexibility Award: Tom Duke was given the award in recognition of his outstanding technical support, media and photography, and show casing school productions and other community events.

n Team Working Award: Gary Reeve Memorial Cup was presented to Jamie Ampleford and the Tim Roberts Memorial Cup to Ellie Young.

A further team award was made to the footballers for the donation of their legs for waxing in aid of Comic Relief, and their rendition of ‘Gangnam Style’ in pink tutus in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Nine of the Sixth Form College students who took part in the Brighton Half Marathon in aid of a range of charities were also recognised.

n Leadership Award: Deputy head Dominic Kenrick presented awards to Ben Miller, Emma Watson-Jones, Hayley Weir, Alex Powel, Lara Wilson and Mohammed Al-Shibli of the Student Leadership Team.

The event also included performances by Emma Bowman, Feyisayo Bello who performed the song ‘Listen’ for which she won Steyning has Talent 2013 and band Pulse.
