Worthing Musical Theatre Company’s ‘Hairspray’ a Sell-out Success!

Last week saw the members of WMTC take a trip to Baltimore in their production of ‘Hairspray’. This was expertly directed and choreographed by Tony Bright, who knew how to get the best out of all members of the company. The age range of those performing was from 14yrs to 80yrs and everybody had something to contribute.

The show was energetic and lively throughout and had the huge audiences dancing along to the excellent live band playing the 60s style tunes.

Mr James Lelean (Head of Performance at The Sir Robert Woodard Academy) was superbly transformed into the ample Edna Turnblad and gave a stunning performance after having musically directed and trained the cast and musicians.

The lead role of Tracy Turnblad was played by Chloe Holt. She was barely offstage and her beautiful singing voice, convincing acting and sheer stamina carried the audience expertly through the story. Chloe was supported by a strong cast, both principals and ensemble.

The opening performance saw many local children attending, who were also wowed by the story and spectacular scenes. This enabled their teachers to address the show’s themes of racism and self-image.

For many cast members, who have performed at the Pavilion for several years, this was an awesome experience as audiences had never been so large! ‘The wave of noise from the audience at the end, just hit you – it was stunning!’ said Anthony Towers who played Tracy’s Dad, Wilbur Turnblad.

WMTC has received very positive feedback: ‘An excellent feel-good show, we’ve not seen better,’ said one audience member.

Look out for WMTC’s next production of ‘Into the Woods’ in September.
