Zippos Circus, Pavilion Theatre, Worthing

THE best thing about Zippos Circus is the simple fact that it exists.

TV talent and singing shows have boosted the popularity of live stage acts in recent years. But on the local scene these types of productions still need all the support they can get.

With no animals, Zippos came across as more of a variety show than a circus. But there was still a lot of talent shown, with colourful jugglers, dancers and clowns.

One clown act saw four adults pulled out of their seats for a Stars Wars pretend film scene. It could have gone horribly wrong but it was actually very entertaining.

The daredevilry shown in other acts certainly had people on the edge of their seats. Acrobat Robert Foxall particularly stood out, twirling across the theatre's rafters.

Yet some of the skills shown did need a bit more fine-tuning. Some of the humour was slow and the jugglers not always in control. The circus master was also somewhat obsessed with making sure performers got lots of applause.

It may need a tweak here and there but the evening was fun and an enjoyable experience.
