FILM SOCIETY: The next film is on Thursday, December 6 and is The Breadwinner. Adapted from a novel by Deborah Ellis this film is based on her interviews with girls and women in the refugee camps in Pakistan. The film is about a courageous 11 year old girl, Parvana, living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2001. After the wrongful arrest of her father by the Taliban, unable to leave the house unchaperoned, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy enabling her to sell meagre goods to support her family. In parallel with Parvana’s story, the film is a history of Afghanistan, told as a fable. Director: Norah Twomey. English, 2017, 127 mins 12A Cert.
