Adur and Worthing businesses offered grants for Covid-19 recovery

Businesses looking to bounce back from the effects of Covid-19 may be eligible for a cash boost through Adur and Worthing councils.

More than £140,000 has been made available through the Small Business Growth Grant as part of wider efforts to support recovery and expand the local economy.

Businesses with up to 50 employees can also apply to the councils for £1,000 towards creating new apprenticeships in their companies.

Brian Boggis, Adur District Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We know these have been tough times for local businesses which is why we are determined to use our resources to support them, create local jobs and secure opportunities for young people.”

The funding has been made available as part of the councils’ ‘And Then...’ – a programme of interventions designed to help Adur and Worthing’s communities bounce back from Covid-19.

The Small Business Growth Grant is available to firms of up to 10 employees. Companies will be required to match fund 50 per cent of each grant, which can go up to £2,500.

Apprenticeship Grants provide a one-off payment of £1,000 towards the cost of taking on an apprentice, up to a maximum of two per business.

Both are delivered in conjunction with the Adur and Worthing Business Partnership and aim to support spend with local suppliers and retailers rather than national chains.

Applications are considered by an independent panel made up of representatives of the local business community which meets every month.

Shoreham-based social enterprise IBDRelief benefited from a business grant last year.

The firm, which aims to improve the quality of life for people with inflammatory bowel diseases, applied for funding for a new computer to create online information videos.

Owner Sub Tucknott said it allowed them to make more than 50 videos for a children’s Crohn’s disease charity. The grant-funded videos will appear on a new app being developed by the firm to educate and support young sufferers of IBD.
