Adur leisure centres go into liquidation as over 150 people made redundant

Adur Community Leisure, a local arm of Impulse Leisure, has gone into liquidation following a last gasp bid to secure financial support from Adur District Council.

Last month the company warned 154 jobs would be lost if it was forced to cease operations at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre, Southwick Leisure Centre and Wadurs Community Pool in Shoreham.

A spokesman for Impulse Leisure said: "Due largely to the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the finances of Adur Community Leisure Ltd (ACL), the Board of Trustees has unfortunately resolved to wind down the company and place it into formal creditors’ voluntary liquidation, which will happen in the next few days.

"Formal written notifications will be issued to ACL’s creditors to inform them of the situation. It is with deep regret that as part of this process all of ACL’s staff have been notified of their redundancy/pending redundancy from the company. Please bear with us and them at this difficult time."

Impulse Leisure also operates the Gym Hub in Worthing and Storrington Leisure Centre, and in June warned all centres could collapse without support from the council.

It had outlined its intention to reject the request for funding, saying it found the company's recovery plan to be 'lacking in detail and insufficiently robust'.

But a late resubmission from Impulse Leisure forced the council to delay making a decision on July 7.

The council has been approached for comment.
