Ashington nursery's Chelsea success

AN Ashington-based nursery has returned from the Chelsea Flower Show with a bronze award.

The Big Plant Nursery, in Hole Street, Ashington, scooped the award in the floral marquee category.

Nursery owner Bruce Jordan said: "It was an absolute honour to be invited and a huge achievement for us."

Mr Jordan said he was more than happy with bronze since the exhibit had not gone entirely to plan due to such bad weather.

The creation had a Mediterranean feel, containing plants from all over the world and featuring reclaimed olive trees from Spain.

Mr Jordan said: "Due to global warming, these olive trees are being dug up, because they are not yielding fruit, and are being burned as firewood."

The Big Plant Nursery has been selecting these plants and bringing them to the UK, where they are flourishing in gardens.

The nursery will also have an exhibit at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July.

Also successful at the Chelsea Flower Show was the Brinsbury Campus of Chichester College, based at North Heath, Pulborough, winning the Bronze Lindley award in the category of continuous learning.
