Bad weather forces West Chiltington wine producer to scrap harvest

The award-winning vineyard says it has made this decision as part of its commitment to perfection.

This year’s unusually bad weather is said to have compromised the quality and volume of their grapes grown on the estate.

Nyetimber winemaker Cherie Spriggs said: “The decision to not make wine from 2012 is a difficult one, not just for me but for our whole team.

“My first obligation as the winemaker is to ensure the quality of Nyetimber’s wines, and we have collectively come to the decision that the grapes from 2012 cannot deliver the standards we have achieved in the past and will again in the future.”

Nyetimber has 400 acres in West Sussex and Hampshire.

This year, Nyetimber was chosen as the only sparking wine used to toast the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee lunch at Westminster Hall and was served to party guests on the Spirit of Chartwell that led the flotilla on its procession along the river Thames.

Nyetimber has won countless accolades including ‘Best Worldwide Sparkling Wine’ at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
