Following the closure of all staffed sites in March as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, English Heritage announced that the attraction will reopen on Saturday (June 13).

It said the iconic abbey and battlefield is among the very first of English Heritage’s staffed properties to reopen after having to close in March.

English Heritage said new measures have been introduced by the charity to ensure the health and wellbeing of members, visitors, volunteers and staff.

Those who visit over the weekend can expect their day out to be a little different with social distancing in place.

The charity said to ensure a safe experience, visitor numbers will be limited so all those planning to visit, including members, will have to book in advance on the English Heritage website and arrive during their time slot.

Only those with pre-booked tickets will be permitted entry, although once on site, visitors are welcome to stay as long as they like.

English Heritage said most of the experience will be outside, where guests can roam while staying two metres apart from others.

Visitors will be able to discover abbey ruins and ‘meet’ the Normans and Saxons on the sculpture trail, take a stroll to explore the battlefield walk, then head to the roof of the monks’ dormitory for stunning views of this historic site.

Natasha Williams, head of historic properties, Sussex, said: “Our staff and volunteers here have, been working hard to adapt 1066 Battle of Hastings Abbey & Battlefield for reopening.

“We want to reassure our visitors that their wellbeing is paramount which is why we have put stringent social distancing measures in place as well as reinforcing our high hygiene standards.

“During this time the 1066 Battlefield has once again been part of history, shutting its gates while the country battled this pandemic, however all our staff are excited to now reopen and greet visitors this coming weekend. Whether you’re looking for a fun place for the family to let off steam, inspiration for home-schooling, or just a wide open space to take in the peace and quiet, we’re delighted to welcome our visitors back.”
