A proposal has been made to build retirement apartments on the site of the former cattle market in Hailsham.

McCarthy Stone is hoping to build 62 retirement apartments for over 70s on the site in Market Street.

Developers say the main building would ‘emulate the scale and design of the surrounding buildings’ and include ‘sensitively designed bungalows’ linked to the main building too.

A statement from McCarthy Stone said, “The plans have been designed to pay special attention to the important view of the St Mary’s Church in Hailsham from Market Street, minimise any overlooking to neighbouring properties, and site well within the street scene.

“We are also committed to delivering an environmentally friendly and sustainable development, and will be incorporating energy efficient design measures and renewable energy technologies into our proposals as they progress.”

According to the developers, the proposal includes 62 retirement extra care apartments set across one building; 17 single storey extra care bungalows; shared facilities for the whole retirement village, including a communal lounge, bistro, salon and a hotel-style guest suite; parking for 77 cars and facilities for bicycles and mobility scooters and outdoor spaces including a communal garden and individual gardens for the bungalows.

The statement said, “We have carefully considered our design, to breathe life to this brownfield site, and our proposals present an exciting opportunity to bring forward high-quality, low maintenance homes.”
