Burgess Hill welcomes outdoor market – in pictures

The sun shone as Burgess Hill welcomed its new monthly town market on Saturday, September 12.

Shoppers enjoyed purchasing goods from the various stallholders who were selling sustainable local foods, goods and crafts, such as The Great British Charcuterie, Philpots Farm, Iberica Spanish Food, High Weald Dairy, Miss Mirandas Marvellous Bakes, Sheddie Designs, Fruit & Veg Boxes Horsham Ltd, Charlotte Grace Casuals, Better than Logs, Love that Stuff, Scrapless CIC and The ReMake Store. Town mayor Roger Cartwright was joined by MP Mims Davies, district council chairman Colin Trumble, town council leader Robert Eggleston, and chairman of the Market Working Group Matthew Cornish, to officially open the market. A spokesman for the town council said: “Burgess Hill Town Council is launching various initiatives to try to regenerate the town centre. The first of these projects is the open market which has been 6 months in the planning to bring the fabulous variation of stalls to Burgess Hill town centre.” Mr Cornish added: “Burgess Hill welcomed shoppers back to the new town market with socially distanced open arms on Saturday. Twenty-one stalls offered everything from fresh fish and local farm eggs to delicious cakes, brownies and Sussex cheeses. It was a delight to see so many people support the new town market so safely and sensibly in the sunshine. Burgess Hill Town Council is looking forward to establishing the market as a regular fixture on the second Saturday of each month. Footfall in the town was clearly up and we look forward to welcoming stall holders and more shoppers back again for the next market on Saturday, October 10, from 9am to 2pm.” Burgess Hill had a thriving market up until the mid-1990s with people coming from across Sussex to visit it.
