The new project would involve shipping containers being used to create the Railway Quay Hub, Lewes District Council said.

It said it hoped that these would be used for an information hub for visitors, a cafe or refreshment facility for residents and visitors and a space for cycle hire.

He added: “The government grant would provide a fantastic opportunity to regenerate the site and we are looking forward to hearing from local business owners and entrepreneurs that would like to get involved.”

Railway Quay has a long industrial heritage and was purchased by Lewes District Council through Local Growth Funding in 2017.

It is one of the eight sites that make up the Newhaven Enterprise Zone which is committed to generating economic growth within the town.
