The business, which has a one plant in Pulborough and another in East Grinstead, is warning that UK supplies of gas have been running perilously low and that the consequences of this are harming firms and stifling employment.

Temporarily running out of gas altogether would be disastrous for many businesses, claims Ibstock – and its plea for Government intervention is backed by organisations including the British Chambers of Commerce, the TUC and the British Ceramic Confederation.

Laura Cohen, chief executive of the British Ceramic Confederation, said: “DECC has to bring down the £50 million damage threshold before it’s too late.

“Too many vital industries are excluded by the existing levels.”
