Chichester University hosts Enterprising Women for schools

STUDENTS from across the south were given advice by successful women from across the UK in an event at the University of Chichester.

Senior female figures from international firms such as L’Oreal, Virgin Atlantic and IBM took part in the Enterprising Women event last Wednesday, encouraging schoolgirls to achieve their potential.

The keynote speaker at the event was Dr Sarah Gilroy, the University’s deputy vice-chancellor.

She said: “Like many of the speakers I feel strongly that it is important to raise awareness of the breadth of roles and professions that the students could aspire to.

“Hopefully, the young women will also have gained more insight into what they can do themselves and with others, to help achieve their potential.”

As well as industry leaders from the private sector, the panel included entrepreneurs, freelance journalists and the director of the BBC Academy, each presenting their own success stories to inspire the next generation.

The event took place at the University’s Bognor Regis campus, timed to coincide with Global Enterprise Week.

It began with a business breakfast where
students had the chance to network with speakers, followed by an activity session about career progression.

Students got the opportunity to speak to the panel in small groups about their roles within their organisations and how they progressed up the educational ladder to their current position.

The speakers at the event included director of the BBC Academy Anne Morrison, Leisha Barnett, fashion and style editor
Glamour.com, and Louise Whiteoak, head of Joint Forensic Investigations at Sussex and Surrey Police, among others.

The schools who attended the event included The Academy, Selsey, Bourne Community College, Midhurst Rother College, The Regis School and Felpham Community College.
