The surveys are carried out by the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce which says that with such high infection rates in the town, supermarkets should be doing all they can to ensure protective measures are put in place such as restricting numbers of shoppers, sanitisation stations and cleaning protocols.

At the top of the table this week is Sainsbury’s in The Beacon followed by ASDA with Tesco in Lottbridge Drove in third place and M&S in Terminus Road in fourth.

In the bottom five, Lidl stores in Dittons Road and Seaside and Aldi in Hampden Park were found, according to the survey, to not be cleaning baskets and trolleys, had little accessible sanitisation, poor signage, no numbers control and staff were not briefed.

Sainsbury’s in Broadwater Way, Waitrose and Morrisons all sit in the middle of the table with a number of areas needing to be improved, according to the survey.

The chamber’s Christina Ewbank praised ASDA’s management for the improvements it has made recently and said the Eastbourne store’s Karl Smith, Stefan Waring and the whole team should be commended for their efforts to help reduce the infection rate in the town.

She also called for those in the bottom of the table to up their game.

Ms Ewbank said, “Some supermarkets say they are following government guidelines but unfortunately following government guidelines is not enough during the current lockdown as the infection rate has reached 1 in 25 people in Eastbourne.

“We want the supermarkets we have identified to review their procedures and tighten them up as much as possible. It really is a matter of life and death.”
