Food delivery drivers are parking in disabled parking spaces in Eastbourne town centre as wardens are currently unable to issue penalties.

The entire length of Cornfield Road is a free for all for motorists as signage hasn’t been installed and white lines not painted on the road meaning parking tickets cannot be issued.

Parking wardens working on behalf of East Sussex County Council say they have no power to issue tickets at present until the whole road is completed.

At the beginning of December East Sussex County Council said it was continuing to “work with contractors to ensure lining work on the new road surface in Eastbourne town centre takes place as soon as possible” and that “until the road markings are completed we would urge motorists to park responsibly, considerately and safely”.

But the issue remains unresolved and now disabled badge holders say they are unable to park in dedicated spaces as they are being taken by able bodied drivers and food delivery couriers who park there will collecting orders to be delivered.

Dennis Welch told the Herald, “Disabled parking spaces outside the old Tourist Information Centre in Cornfield Road is not only being used for free parking by non-blue badge holders and it is now been taken over by fast food drivers who park there to collect their deliveries from food outlets.

“Two days ago we had to park up in Hyde Gardens with a view of this area and it is a constant stream of cars and motorcycles picking up food.

“Some of the parking is dangerous. How long is this going on for I have to wonder? There are no wardens or police booking or moving anyone on.

“This situation is absolutely awful and why don’t the council do something about it? We have served our dues and all we ask for is to park a little closer to the amenities. It’s not much to ask. If something is not done soon someone is going to be seriously injured or even killed. These people are more than capable of walking a short distance.”

East Sussex County Council has been asked to comment.
