Free parking in Newhaven for six months

Two car parks in Newhaven have removed charges to help support local businesses by encouraging shoppers to explore the town’s shops and restaurants.

Dacre Road multi-storey car park and Lower Place car park will be free for a six-month period thanks to a £5,000 donation from Newhaven Enterprise Zone.

Councillor James MacCleary, Leader of Lewes District Council and ward councillor for Newhaven South, said: “I’m really pleased to be able to announce this as it is the sort of support our local businesses have been asking for.

“Obviously there is a cost attached and I’m grateful that Newhaven Enterprise Zone has agreed to cover the cost.

“It’s a great incentive for shoppers to explore the town and support local independent shops and restaurants.”

With the free parking available, visitors to the town are also reminded to continue to observe social distancing while out and about completing their Christmas shopping.

Graham Peters, chairman of Newhaven Enterprise Zone, said: “This is fantastic news for Newhaven and its local businesses.

“Businesses have taken a real battering during the coronavirus pandemic and we want to do all we can to support our traders.

“We hope that people will take advantage of the free parking over the next six months and help our businesses to navigate through these challenging times.”

Mike Shorer, president of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce, added: “Free parking is one Christmas present everyone is pleased to get.”

“Businesses in the town have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and we are doing everything we can to support them.

“I encourage people to come and visit the town to see what’s on offer.”
